Thor Ragnarok's Taika Waititi Is Playing An Imaginary Adolf Hitler In His Next Movie

Filmmaker Taika Waititi has built a career around weird content, from his work on Flight of the Concords to directing movies like What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilder people. Most recently, he helmed and starred in Thor: Ragnarok, which had a significantly different tone compared to the God of Thunder's previous two movies. Directing a cosmically-colorful Marvel movie, as well as playing the soft-spoken rock warrior Korg, is pretty wild even by Waititi's standards, but as hard as it is to believe, one of his upcoming movies will see him playing his craziest role yet: an imaginary version of Adolf Hitler.

Although Taika Waititi was previously announced to be directing on a stop-motion animated movies about Bubbles, Michael Jackson's former pet and one of history's most famous chimps, Wait it's next movie will actually be Jojo Rabbit, based off a script that he wrote years ago that made the 2012 Black List, an annual ranking of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood. Jojo Rabbit is about a 10-year-old boy who is desperately trying to fit into Adolph Hitler's fascist regime during World War II. With his father gone, the lonely boy creates an imaginary friend who is an amalgamation of his father and the führer. Waititi's Hitler is described as "goofy, charming, and glides through life with a childlike naivety." As Waititi told The Wrap:

It's my version of... a lonely boy's best version of his hero, which is really his dad.

An early logline for Jojo Rabbit also mentioned that the story involves the young boy discovering that his mother is hiding a 15-year-old Jewish girl in their house. Jojo Rabbit is looking to begin production sometime this May, and it's intended to be one of Fox Searchlight's first releases under the new Disney ownership, though it's worth noting that the Mouse House's purchase of Fox's entertainment holdings hasn't been finalized yet.

A comedy about a boy hanging out with an imaginary version of Adolf Hitler is sure to raise some eyebrows, if not outright court controversy, but the combination of Taika Waititi involvement both on and off camera, and the fact this his Hitler will not be a sympathetic depiction of the dictator, means that Jojo Rabbit could be something truly hilarious and clever, not to mention obviously unique. At the very least, the movie sounds like it will fit well with the rest of the quirky entries on Waititi's resume.
