Varun Dhawan is being lauded for nailing the simplicity and authenticity of his look as Mauji, the Darzi in Sui Dhaga: Made In India. The credit goes to the source of his inspiration — Noor, the tailor who oversaw his training as a garment-maker for the Sharat Katariya (Dum Laga Ke Haisha) directorial, which also stars Anushka Sharma.
Costume designer Darshan Jhalan tells us, “Mauji is a simple guy from the lower-middle-class income strata who works in the city as a help/peon in a sewing machine store. Regular people on the streets became an inspiration for us.” From the styling point of view, Darshan adds that Varun’s look has the aspects of a tailor who could offer practical solutions to common problems. For instance, a zipper on the side of the pants that would reduce the size of the flare to keep it from getting caught while cycling or on the hem to prevent the ends from tearing. “I believe these intricate details make the audience see something new and adds to the authenticity of the character from a small town in India,” Darshan adds.
