Lok Sabha Polls Update: Congress releases list of star campaigners for Assam, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh

Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, party president Rahul Gandhi and senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad are among star campaigners of the Congress party.

The Congress party on Tuesday announced the names of campaigners for Assam and Uttar Pradesh for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The two lists, one for each state, contain the names of 40-star campaigners including the leaders, former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, party President Rahul Gandhi, and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, among others.

Assam will go to polls in three phases. Five constituencies each will go to polls in the first two phases on April 11 and 18 and four seats in the third phase (April 23).

Meanwhile, polling in 80 constituencies of Uttar Pradesh will be spread across all seven phases- April 11, 18, 23, 29, May 6, 12 and 19.

UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra along with Congress general secretary for Uttar Pradesh West Jyotiraditya Scindia are some of the leaders who will hold election rallies and public meetings both in Uttar Pradesh and Assam.

The names of senior leaders like Ahmed Patel and Harish Rawat figure among the campaigners for the Eastern state.

The list released for Uttar Pradesh campaigners includes Raj Babbar and senior party leaders like Gulam Nabi Azad and Ashok Gehlot. The seven-phased Lok Sabha elections are scheduled to be held from April 11 and will go on till May 19. Results of the polls will be declared on May 23.

Cong top guns to blaze campaign trail in Chhattisgarh

The Congress brass will canvass for the party in Chhattisgarh, which will vote in three phases between April 11 and April 23.

The Congress is hoping to end the poll victory jinx in Chhattisgarh, where the BJP always has had an upper hand.

In the 2014 general elections, the Congress had won only one out of total 11 seats.

"Other prominent leaders who will hit the hustings are former prime minister Manmohan Singh, PL Punia, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mukul Wasnik, Raj Babbar, Anand Sharma and Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel," said state Congress spokesperson Shailesh Nitin Trivedi Tuesday.

State ministers and party leaders will also campaign for candidates.

"Rahul Gandhi had extensively campaigned in the state ahead of the 2018 assembly elections, which greatly helped the party in recording a landslide victory," he said.

In that election, the Congress won 68 out of 90 seats, ending the 15-year rule of the BJP.

Polling will be held for Naxal-hit Bastar (ST) constituency in the first phase on April 11.

Three seats, namely Mahasamund, Rajnandgaon and Kanker (ST) will vote in the second phase on April 18.

Remaining seven seats--Raipur, Durg, Bilaspur, Raigarh (ST), Korba, Janjgir-Champa (SC) and Surguja (ST) - will vote in the last phase on April 23.

Both the Congress and the BJP have declared candidates for the 11 constituencies.

The BJP has been winning 10 out of 11 seats in Chhattisgarh since 2004 general elections.
