B-Town beauties show how to give a modern twist to the traditional six-yard

Trends may come and go, but sari is one piece of clothing that never goes out of fashion. Bollywood beauties have always fallen for its charm, the whole nine yards! From teaming it up with cholis to spaghetti blouses, they have turned up the sass even in the traditional garb. And in recent times, they are experimenting by adding a belt to the look. Take a cue about how you can revamp the look from the divas and designers.

During Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations at Mukesh and Nita Ambani’s house, Katrina Kaif made heads turn in a peach lehenga sari. To give her look a twist, she opted for a belt that cinched her waist, highlighting her perfect curves. During the promotions of her last release Bharat, too, Kat had draped a pink floral printed six-yard with a girdle around her waist. Shilpa Shetty Kundra, too, added cheer and glamour to her look around the festive season in a stunning yellow Bandhani printed sari, with a belt and scalloped pallu.

For a book launch event, Vidya Balan donned a purple printed sari and made her look stand out with a tan-colored leather waistband. Taapsee Pannu gave one major fashion goals during the promotions of her film Mission Mangal. During one of the events, she wore a printed nine-yard with a matching strappy blouse. She added a waist belt to her look, giving it a modern touch.

Chitrangda Singh wore a black ruffled sari, paired with a studded cummerbund and a sleeveless blouse at an event. A few months back, Alia Bhatt wore a stunning green paisley drape for an event. She teamed it with a one-shoulder blouse and a belt, which set off the busy print. Karisma Kapoor wore a multicolored sari with a brown blazer and waistband.

Stylist Isha Bhansali says about the trend, “Most actresses mainly go for this trend as it cinches their waists, making them look curvy and sexy. It also makes them more poised and graceful.” Designer AD Singh adds, “People who like to accessorize keeping the less-is-more look, experiment with the cinch giving their look a twist.”

How you can use it

While choosing this trend, Isha states that if the sari is heavy or thick, adding a belt won’t be practical. “It’s best to go for it in a sari with fluid fabric. If the drape is embellished, make sure it’s not done on the center body as that will bulge up further with the belt.” AD suggests that one pick the strappy accessory that goes with the look. “A modern turn can have a western style-plain/bossed or a clasp belt. An ethnic one can have an encrusted bejeweled belt,” says he. He also states that one should be extremely fit in order to carry off this look, as sometimes the belt cannot make you look flattering if you have a body type that isn’t ideal for it.
