Red has always been associated with festivals and auspiciousness. It’s not just a traditional color but has made it to the wardrobes of B-Towners and seems to be the IT color of the season! From salwar kameez, pantsuits, joggers, gowns to casual daily wear, many celebs have rocked the hue with all the power.

Sonam K Ahuja has always been in the news for her unique fashion choices. During the promotions of her film The Zoya Factor, she chose to wear only red. Needless to say, she did make heads turn with all her looks — from ethnic to western. She wore an Anarkali on her visit to a temple and later sported co-ord separates among others.

Shraddha Kapoor sported the shade, too, as she stepped out for a meeting. The Chhichhore actress wore a sleeveless jumpsuit that was cinched at the waist with a matching belt. The bootleg style pants complementing her petite frame perfectly. Richa Chadha wore a red hot asymmetrical pantsuit during the screening of her film Section 375.

While these beauties opted for the tint, Madhuri Dixit, Radhika Madan, and Rakul Preet Singh raised the temperature with their red gowns at recent award ceremonies.

Parineeti Chopra opted for a red tracksuit while collecting air miles. Sunny Leone, too, donned a hot ruffled sari with a silver blouse and black belt as she shot a promotional song for the upcoming film Motichoor Chaknachoor along with Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

Well, the color is not a favorite only among the divas but Bollywood hunks are also fond of it. Ranveer Singh attended an award show in a Samurai avatar, with a grey suit and a dash of the shade with a red cape wrapped around. Arjun Kapoor wore a cool hoodie with black trousers on National Cancer Rose Day.

Designer Nachiket Barve offers his take on the shade, “Red is a great color on almost all kinds of skin tones and personalities but it’s about finding the right kind for oneself. Also, on social media, it comes out beautifully in photographs, plus it makes your complexion glow more.”

Adds designer Rina Dhaka, “Red is the new black for all trends. As it is the color of passion, it cannot be restricted to dresses but used in the form of bottoms, sportswear or footwear. A flash of the hue paired along with grey or black suits perfectly.”

Speaking about guys rocking red, Nachiket observes, “Now, more and more men are also wearing different colors, hence this becomes a dominating part of their wardrobe. It has become a big trade as earlier men stuck to simple and easy shades but now they wear more challenging things.”

Tips to go red

Rina feels that the tincture can never go wrong with anyone. “There is so much of choice while styling red. One can even use a stonewashed version if they do not want to go all pronounced. However a red-on-red always works the best,” she weighs in.

Nachiket states, “The important thing to keep in mind is that it should complement your skin tone and not overpower it. Secondly, the fabric should be right. It’s an extremely tricky color and will look tacky if the cloth is not nice.”

Make-up tips

Since it’s Navratri time and many would be going red in ethnic outfits, make-up expert Clint Fernandes suggests golden eye make-up with a slight soft smokey effect along with red lips. He states, “If it is a heavy outfit with embroidery, one should never go with light eyes — especially with Indian clothes as it will then look plain.” For the eyes, he informs that there’s no particular rule. “One can do a smokey or light eye, it does not matter. Nowadays, everything works!”

Though, he also adds that the key element to keep in mind is to do your lip prep. “Follow it up with a balm and then line the lips with a red color pencil and follow that with a liquid matte long-stay color,” he advises.
