Thousands Gather To Bid Farewell To Sridevi, Funeral At 3.30 pm: 10 Facts

Sridevi died due to accidental drowning following loss of consciousness, according to a forensic report.



NEW DELHI:  Bollywood icon Sridevi's body has been taken this morning the Celebration Sports Club, a short distance from her Lokhandwala residence in Mumbai, for family, friends, and fans to pay their last respects. The funeral will be held in at 3.30 pm today. Sridevi, 54, died in Dubai on Saturday and her body was flown by private jet to Mumbai last evening.

Here's your 10-point cheatsheet:
  1. In a statement, her family asked people to join them to pay respect to the remarkable actor, beloved wife and loving mother between 9.30 am to 12.30 pm at the club.

  2. Sridevi's last journey would commence from the club to the crematorium about 7 km away near Pawan Hans, Vile Parle West at 2 pm. The last rites will take place at 3.30 pm onwards, the statement said.

  3. Hundreds of fans had waited outside the Kapoor residence in Lokhandwala as the ambulance carrying Sridevi's body drove in from the airport with a police escort. She is celebrated for depicting strong female characters on screen and as the "first female superstar of India" in male superstar-dominated Bollywood.

  4. It had taken Dubai authorities three days to complete the formalities. Indian Ambassador to the UAE Navdeep Suri later told NDTV that they had worked closely with the authorities to have the various processes completed as early as possible. Mr. Suri, who was in touch with the family as they waited said the "the devastation and the grief were very visible. It is what you would expect".

  5. According to the forensic report, she died due to accidental drowning following the loss of consciousness. "The case has now been closed," the Dubai government's media office later announced.

  6. Boney Kapoor was in Dubai, where he was joined by actor Arjun Kapoor on Tuesday, who is his son from his first marriage. Mr. Kapoor's nephew Saurabh Malhotra waited outside the morgue and accompanied Sridevi's body to the embalming center. 

  7. Sridevi's daughters Jhanvi, 20, and Khushi, 17 were in Mumbai, where the film fraternity has been pouring in since Sunday at the home of actor Anil Kapoor, Sridevi's brother-in-law and her co-star in blockbuster hits including Mr. India. 

  8. Sridevi, Boney Kapoor and their younger daughter Khushi had gone to Dubai to attend the wedding of Mr. Kapoor's nephew Mohit Marwah. Boney Kapoor returned to Mumbai with their daughter after the wedding on Tuesday, February 20, while Sridevi stayed back. Boney Kapoor returned to Dubai on Saturday to surprise his wife, reports said. The couple was to go out for dinner, but Sridevi collapsed in the bathroom while getting ready.

  9. In a career spanned five decades - she started working in movies at age 4 - Sridevi acted in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam movies before scripting a soaring career in Bollywood. On her Twitter handle, Sridevi - who had last retweeted a tribute performance originally pictured on her less than 24 hours before her death - preferred to describe herself as "Actor-MOM-Housewife-Actor Again!"

  10. Sridevi made a searing return to movies in 2012 after a 15-year break with the smash-hit "English Vinglish", stunned fans with her performance as a villainous queen in a Tamil movie "Puli" and followed it up with the thriller "Mom". She shot for a special appearance in superstar Shah Rukh Khan's upcoming film - "Zero" - which releases in December.

Finally, Sridevi's body handed over to family




'Case closed,' Dubai public prosecution says about Sridevi's death.

The Dubai public prosecutor's office has closed the investigation into Sridevi's death and cited the forensic report to say she accidentally drowned following a loss of consciousness.

According to local media reports, the family has taken custody of the body and given it for embalming.

The Dubai media office, the Dubai government's official Twitter handle, in a series of tweets said the decision to release the body was taken after thorough investigation.

'Dubai Public Prosecution has approved the release of the body of the Indian actress Sridevi to her family following the completion of a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of her death,' it said.

'Dubai Public Prosecution stressed that all regular procedures followed in such cases have been completed. As per the forensic report, the death of the Indian actress occurred due to accidental drowning following loss of consciousness. The case has now been closed.'

Earlier in the day, Arjun Kapoor -- Boney Kapoor's son -- had taken a flight to Dubai to be with his father as he wrapped up the formalities to bring Sridevi home to Mumbai.



'Arjun has gone to Dubai this morning to be with his father at the hotel while the formalities are being wrapped up and to oversee the return journey,' a statement from the family in Mumbai said.

The Dubai police Twitter handle said Sridevi drowned in the hotel bathtub after she lost consciousness.

A forensic report circulated on various media outlets used the term 'accidental drowning' as the cause of her death.

The 54-year-old actor passed away in her hotel room in the Jumeirah Emirates Towers late on Saturday.

The Dubai police tweeted it had transferred the case to the Dubai public prosecution which will carry out the legal procedures followed in such cases.

'Following the completion of post-mortem analysis, Dubai police headquarters stated that Sridevi's death occurred due to drowning in her hotel apartment's bathtub following loss of consciousness,' it said.

The police recorded the statement of her film-maker husband Boney Kapoor who reportedly discovered Sridevi unconscious in a bathtub filled with water. She was taken to a hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.

The Dubai-based Gulf News newspaper alleged that the actor was under the influence of alcohol.

Gulf News also posted a copy of the UAE government's forensic report on its Twitter handle.

The report, citing accidental drowning as the cause of death, has a stamp of the 'Ministry of Health UAE' and the director of preventive medicine, Dubai, Dr Sami Wadie.

The report mentioned the actor's full name, Sreedevi Boney Kapoor Ayyappan, her passport number, date of the incident (February 24, 2018) and the cause of death.

India's Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates Navdeep Singh Puri earlier asked the public not to speculate about the cause of Sridevi's death.

'We are in regular contact with the family of #Sridevi and other well-wishers. We share their pain,' Ambassador Puri tweeted.

'Our experience in similar cases tells us that it does take 2-3 days to complete processes. We leave it to the experts to determine cause of demise. Let's be responsible,' the diplomat said.

Sridevi was in Dubai for a family wedding and had stayed back after the ceremonies.

Her husband had flown back to India with their younger daughter Khushi, but returned to Dubai to surprise her.

The news of her death, first reported at around 3 am IST on Sunday, sent shock waves across India and the world with those who knew her at a loss to explain how the star, who was present at several wedding functions in Dubai last week, could suddenly breathe her last.

Social media condemns sensational reporting of Sridevi's demise



As the nation remains gloom following the death of veteran actor Sridevi, the 'sensational' reporting by the media post recent developments on the cause of her death has sparked a wave of criticism on social media. On Monday, the forensic report of the 54-year-old Indian actress revealed that she had died of accidental drowning in her hotel room's bathtub, after suffering a dizzying spell. Traces of alcohol were also reportedly found in the actor's body.

Following this, several media outlets took to their channels to ponder over the reports, some even going to the extent of character-shaming the actor for allegedly indulging in alcohol.

In retaliation, twitterers expressed their dissent over the sensational twist that has been given to the actor's untimely demise, evident from the hashtag 'News Ki Maut' (death of news) on Twitter.

"#NewsKiMaut let us respect Late Mrs. Sridevi ji and not do dramatic representations and raise questions about her character," a user wrote.

Another tweet read, "It's not just #NewsKiMaut but #HumanityKiMaut. Compassion is totally missing these days."

An Indian media outlet even ran a special episode titled 'Maut Ka Bathtub' or 'the bathtub causing death' after reports surfaced of her "accidental drowning."

For the unversed, Sridevi passed away on late Saturday night in Dubai, where she was attending a family wedding.

Sridevi's Death Mystery On Last Moments



One of the most popular female superstars ever, Sridevi breathed her last on Saturday evening in a Dubai hospital where she was attending a family wedding in Ras Al Khaimah. But speculations over her death became a big fodder for everyone right now.

Some reports mentioned that Sridevi breathed her last in the bathroom and a room service guy has found her lying motionless before shifting her to a hospital where she was declared brought dead. Other news was that it is Boney Kapoor who found Sridevi's motionless body in a bathtub and shifted to the hospital immediately, where she's declared dead due to cardiac arrest. 

In the first place, speculations started doing rounds with people failing to understand how come she suffered cardiac arrest when there is no history of heart ailments. But actually, anyone could suffer cardiac arrest and there is no need that one should have some pre-found heart-related case history for that. 

Few folks even felt that botched up cosmetic surgeries would have been the cause of her death. They started talking about those swollen lips of Sridevi which have shocked everyone a month ago. Some feel that maybe the actress is under severe stress as she's launching her daughter Jhanvi Kapoor as a heroine and she wants her elder sibling no less to become a superstar with the first film itself. 

There are many things that could cause cardiac arrest including that of stress, tension, high dose of alcohol or some infection in the heart. But until the autopsy report from Dubai hospital comes out, we cannot confirm what exactly happened. That's when the mystery over her death gets unveiled.

Sridevi was Preparing for Surprise Dinner Date Minutes Before Her Death


As Indian film fraternity and fans are yet to come to terms with the tragic and untimely death of legendary actress Sridevi, who passed away in Dubai late Saturday night, here is some light on what she was planning to do minutes before her death.

According to reports, Sridevi was prepping up for a 'surprise' dinner date with her husband Boney Kapoor, when the tragedy happened.

On Saturday, Boney Kapoor returned from Mumbai, went to Sridevi's room in a Dubai hotel at around 5.30 pm, and reportedly invited her for a surprise dinner date. The actress went to the bathroom to have a shower in order to get ready for the dinner. However the, she suffered a cardiac arrest in the bathroom and was discovered by her husband 15 minutes later lying motionless in the bathtub.

Boney tried to revive her, but when he failed to do so, he called a friend and later informed the police. Sridevi was declared dead by the paramedics who arrived shortly.

According to the latest reports, Sridevi's mortal remains will be brought to India in a private jet sent by industrialist Anil Ambani after the formalities are done. Her final rites ceremony will take place later in the day.

What happened before Sridevi’s demise?


Last week, when Sridevi headed to Dubai for the wedding of her nephew Mohit Marwah (her husband Boney Kapoor’s sister’s son), she was in a happy frame of mind.

Accompanied by her hubby and younger daughter Khushi (two of her favorite people besides elder daughter Janhvi), Sri packed the best Manish Malhotra outfits and matching jewellery, all set to dazzle at the sangeet and other ceremonies leading up to the marriage.  

Photographs of her with Khushi went viral online and naturally so, as she looked resplendent.

Post the wedding on February 20, Sri posted her picture with the bride and the groom from the Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah in UAE. Introducing Mohit’s bride as ‘Antara Marwah’, the actress who wore a beautiful green embellished lehenga with banarasi dupatta beamed away.

Janhvi missed the festivities because she was shooting in Mumbai for Dhadak. A source says, “Sri and Boney had seen some of the rushes of Janhvi’s debut film and the star mother was proud of her little baby.”

Post the wedding, Boney flew back to Mumbai with daughter, Khushi. Contrary to her nature, Sri decided to stay back in Dubai for a couple of days. She wanted to spend time with a relative. A source said, “Her sister, Latha, was there in Dubai.”

However, on Saturday at 3.30 pm, IST, Boney took a flight to Dubai to surprise Sri. His co-travelers were Sanjay Dutt and his twins — Iqra and Shahraan.When he reached the hotel, Boney told his wife that they would go for dinner. A source adds, “Sri stepped into the bath and was getting ready to step out for dinner when she had a cardiac arrest.” Boney got her medical aid, but it was too late.

On Sunday morning, Boney’s younger brother Sanjay Kapoor and producer Rajat Rawail took the 4 am the flight to join him in Dubai and make arrangements for Sri’s body to be flown back to Mumbai. Last heard, Sanjay Dutt, who was devastated when he heard of Sri’s demise in Dubai, was desperate to reach Boney.

Sridevi No More: Arjun Kapoor rushes to Mumbai to be with Janhvi, Kapoor family


In a sad turn of events, the Kapoor khandaan which was previously rushing to Dubai to attend Mohit Marwah's wedding, is now heading back to Mumbai after Sridevi’s sudden demise. The actress breathed her last on Saturday night following a cardiac arrest. She was 54. 

With Boney Kapoor and brother Sanjay Kapoor in Dubai to complete the tedious legal formalities after the autopsy, the Kapoor clan is with Janhvi at Anil Kapoor's residence in Mumbai as she is inconsolable. Karan Johar was the first one to rush to her as so as news of Sridevi’s death broke. 

Now Arjun Kapoor, who was in Amritsar to shoot for Namastey England, has flown back to Mumbai to be with the family and sisters in difficult times. While it was considered that Sridevi and Arjun had strained relationship, he called it cordial on a TV show and said, “It's (The relationship with her is) very cordial. I respect anybody in my father's life the same way because he would expect me to do that. So I respect her and don't wish ill towards anyone. That's how I follow.”



Meanwhile, the film fraternity too has started pouring in to pay their condolences to Kapoor family. Karan Johar, Rekha, Rani Mukerji, Annu Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Neelima Azim, Vaibhavi Merchant were spotted entering Anil’s residence last night. 

Sridevi's mortal remains are expected to arrive in Mumbai by today afternoon and the funeral is expected to take place in Juhu sometime on Monday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed his grief over the untimely demise of veteran actor Sridevi.

"Saddened by the untimely demise of noted actor Sridevi. She was a veteran of the film industry, whose long career included diverse roles and memorable performances. My thoughts are with her family and admirers in this hour of grief. May her soul rest in peace," the Prime Minister tweeted.



A Padma Shri recipient, Sridevi died on Saturday night due to a cardiac arrest in Dubai, where she was attending a family wedding with her husband Boney Kapoor and her younger daughter Khushi.

Not just the Prime Minister, several other politicians also expressed their shock over the actor’s sudden demise.

Union Minister Smriti Irani called her ‘a powerhouse of acting’ in her Twitter tribute. ‘Sridevi - a powerhouse of acting , a long journey embellished with success comes to a sudden end. My condolences to her loved ones and fans,’ Irani wrote on Twitter.  

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor wrote a moving tribute and said Sridevi was ‘far too young to be snatched away from her family. It will take a long time to digest such unbelievable news.’

Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala also expressed his shock and said, ‘A tragic loss as Indian cinema loses its ‘Chandani’. Sridevi was easily the most versatile actress with a rare quality to traverse across cine boundaries and a range of roles. Condolences to family & loved ones. RIP!’

It was just a couple of days back that we saw Sridevi happily posing at Mohit Marwah and Antara Motiwala's wedding, and today India has woken up to the news of the actor's sudden demise.

The actress, who was only 54, died due to cardiac arrest on February 24 in Dubai, where she was attending the wedding.

Breaking: Heroine Sridevi No More



Most shocking ever reports say that senior actress Sridevi passed away in Dubai, due to cardiac arrest. She was 54.

According to sources in the family, the actor reportedly died due to cardiac arrest late on the night of February 24 in Dubai, where she had gone, along with her family, to attend her nephew Mohit Marwah's wedding.

Recently she is in the news for her looks where she's rumoured to have got a new surgery done to her lips. But the update is that when she went to Dubai along with her husband Boney Kapoor to attend a family wedding, it is heard that she suffered a cardiac arrest at the hotel.

Sridevi will be survived by her daughters Janvi and Kushi Kapoor along with husband Boney Kapoor. Born on 13th August 1963, Sridevi has half-Telugu and half-Tamil roots and started her career in Telugu and Tamil films. From 1976 to 1982 she succeeded in South films while she moved to Bollywood in 1983 only to be regarded as First Superstar of Bollywood later.

Sridevi was honoured with Padma Sri award in 2013 by Government of India, while other honours and awards are unlimited for her.
