  • Facebook video shows woman alleging policemen were trying to take her away

  • The lobby of an apartment building in a posh Mumbai locality was the setting for high drama and fracas sometime last week. At the center of the midnight commotion were a young woman, men from the Mumbai Police and a security guard.

Videos -- available on social media and retrieved from the building's CCTV system -- show the woman, at various points, hitting a security guard, shouting and screaming at Mumbai Police officers and angrily stripping down to her underwear.

What exactly happened is unclear. Who was at fault is unclear as well.

What we are able to do is piece together information -- from the woman's social media posts and from sources within the Mumbai Police -- and match it to various videos (you can watch the videos at the end of this story or by clicking this link) to understand what went on at the posh building, located in Mumbai's Lokhandwala area.

FIRST VIDEO

The first video, accessed by IndiaToday.in, is from a CCTV camera located at the building's lobby. The video shows a physical fight between a building security guard and the young woman in question -- one Megha Sharma.

The video begins with Sharma approaching the security guard, who is seen sitting at his desk. Sharma is then seen slapping the guard at which point he gets up and shoves her away.

Sharma then pulls up her phone and is seen making multiple taps on the screen -- what she is doing is unclear.

She then once again approached the guard's desk and the two once again get into a physical confrontation. They fight -- Sharma is seen slapping and hitting the guard, the guard is seen dragging and shoving her and simultaneously move to the building's entrance/exit.

Suddenly, Sharma turns around and picks up her wallet, which had fallen to the ground during the melee, and gestures as though she is going to hit the guard with it.

At that very second, the guard unsuccessfully tries to take off one of the shoes. Sharma and the guard continue fighting and head out of the building.

Then, three people and a dog come into the frame. The dog is seen barking wildly while one of the three people -- a man -- is seen trying to intervene in fight between Sharma and the guard.

SECOND VIDEO

The second video is one uploaded by Sharma on Facebook. The video shows her standing inside the building's elevator, Mumbai Policemen and a security guard.

This video shows a visibly scared Sharma screaming and shouting. Based on what she says during the course of the video and based on the social media posts she has put up on Facebook and Twitter, this is what seems to have happened (these are all allegations made by Sharma):

Sharma called the Mumbai Police's 100 helpline number to seek help following her fight with the guard

  • The Mumbai Police sent uniformed men to the building even though it was after midnight
  • The policemen asked Sharma to accompany them back to the police station
  • Sharma refused to do so because there was no woman constable present on the scene
  • One of Sharma's constant refrain through the video is that the men should leave the building and that she will come to the police station during day-time.

Sharma is also repeatedly pleading that she be allowed to go back to her flat. What she seems to be referring to is the fact that the policemen and the security guard are momentarily seen standing across the elevator's door, preventing the doors from closing.

At one point, one of the policemen asks Sharma to give them "two minutes", a second after which the security guard present there goes into the elevator car and appears to press a few buttons on the control panel.

In the video she uploaded on Facebook, Megha Sharma alleges that the men, including the cops, gathered around her were stopping her from going home

"Aap kyun rok rahe ho mujhe [why are you preventing me from going home]," Sharma screams a few seconds later before getting into an argument with a man who seems to be the one shooting the video.

The unidentified man and Sharma continue arguing -- she keeps screaming that the men should leave her alone while the man initially says that she must step out since she made a complaint and then asks why she hit the guard.

Sharma then completely breaks down and starts crying, at which point the video ends.

THIRD VIDEO

There another video, purportedly showing what happens in the moments after the end of video number two. In this video, Sharma is seen stripped down to her underwear.

Her accompanying screams suggest that she stripped in order to shame the men into leaving the spot. "Had to pull off my clothes so that after getting ashamed those guys will walk away from there... [sic]," Sharma wrote on a Twitter post.

Sharma is also heard abusing the security guard, who is heard abusing her right back. Also seen in the background are several people, who are likely the building's other occupants.

SO, WHAT HAPPENED?

Like we said earlier, it is unclear what happened at the Mumbai building last week. Sharma first shared a Twitter post of the incident on October 26. She shared the video on Facebook on October 28.

The Mumbai Police replied to Sharma's October 26 post asking her to share more details privately. A day later, the Mumbai Police -- replying to another of Sharma's tweets -- said, "No one was taken to police station. A policeman visited the housing society after receiving a call on Dial 100 about a commotion in the lobby of the concerned housing society."

Then, the police seems to have spoken to Sharma over the phone. "As per our discussion on phone. We have shared this with Oshiwara police station you can speak to PSI [Police Sub Inspector] Bamane," the Mumbai Police tweeted to Sharma on October 27.

Sources within the Mumbai Police told IndiaToday.in that currently, no case has been registered in the matter but the statements of both Sharma and the security guard involved in the fight have been taken.
