PM Modi unveils Sardar Patels Rs 2,900-Crore "Statue of Unity"; says no Indian will ever forget this day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday unveiled Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's 'Statue of Unity' in Gujarat's Narmada district.

The 182-meter structure of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is touted as the world's tallest. It is twice the height 182-meter statue of Liberty in the US and is built on Sadhu Bet, an islet near the Sardar Sarovar Dam.

The statue was unveiled on the occasion of the fourth Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day), which is observed every year on the birthday of freedom fighter and India's first home minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

BJP President Amit Shah, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, Deputy CM Nitin Patel, Madhya Pradesh Governor and former Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel were present at the inauguration of the statue.

Sardar Patel was bestowed the country's highest civilian award posthumously in 1991, 41 years after his death in 1950.

Addressing the gathering after unveiling the statue of Patel, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "Events like today are very very important in a country's history and such events are difficult to erase. It is a historic and inspiring occasion for all Indians. I am fortunate to dedicate this statue of Sardar Sahab to the nation."

"Today is a day that will be remembered in the history of India. No Indian will ever forget this day," Modi added.

"It's a historical day as the tallest statue in the world - statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who united India, will be dedicated to the nation. It was dream of Prime Minister Narendra Modi since the time he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. His the dream is coming true," said Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.

However, the CPI flayed the Narendra Modi government for 'splurging' nearly Rs 3,000 crore on building Sardar Patel's gigantic statue at a time when debt-ridden farmers are 'being driven to suicide' and millions of people are defecating in the open for want of sanitation facilities.
