Remake Movie: Varun Dhawan confirms "Coolie No.1" remake, says Cant do every film with Alia Bhatt when asked about female lead

Sara Ali Khan, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt

DNA After Hrs was the first one to report that Varun Dhawan is set to team up with his dad David Dhawan for the remake of 1995 hit comedy 'Coolie No. 1' and that Sara Ali Khan has been roped in to play the female lead's role.

There was however no confirmation on the same from the Dhawans until now. But, in a recent BBC interview, Varun himself confirmed the report. While engaging in a candid conversation about his forthcoming projects with the reporter, Varun added 'Coolie No. 1' to the list of his upcoming films.

The actor also confirmed that the remake will be directed by David Dhawan. On being asked who among Alia Bhatt and Sara Ali Khan has been paired opposite him, the 31-year-old actor quipped, "I can't do every film with Alia."

When the reported further quizzed him about Sara's casting, Varun said, "That you will know soon, I don't want to say that. But, Alia and I are not working. We'll do something I think after...we'll give a little break to people because I think for everyone it's like 'oh they are again back together!' They feel we are like 'building friends'. 'They come down and play together every time.'"

Well, Varun may not have put his finger on Sara's name but we have it from trusted sources that the starlet has been locked for Karisma Kapoor's part.

“Varun and Sara will share screen space in the former’s first home production. It will be directed by David Dhawan, who had also helmed the original. This will be the first film to roll out under their banner The One Entertainment. The team wanted a new Jodi for the comedy and the Dhawan's felt Sara would be apt for it,” the source had earlier exclusively revealed to DNA After Hrs.

Incidentally, Sara was offered the part, much before she made her debut on celluloid. The source had added, “They were in talks for some time and had approached her even before Kedarnath hit the marquee. The idea is to adapt the original and modernize it. The 23-year-old will step into Karisma’s shoes, but the makers are changing the character sketch a bit and making it even more prominent in the remake.”

The film is expected to go on floors by July this year. His and Sara's bulk dates have been locked. The team is eyeing a festival release in the first half of 2020.

The original, starring Govinda and Karisma Kapoor, which released in 1995, was a huge hit.
