Throwback Thursday: When Sushmita Sen won 'Miss India' wearing gown from Sarojini Nagar

Sushmita Sen confessed that the robe she wore while winning Miss India was made up of cloth bought from Sarojini Nagar in Delhi, revealed the actress to late actor Farooq Shaikh

Sushmita Sen, who was crowned 'Miss India' in 1994, actually wore a gown stitched together from a fabric bought from Sarojini Nagar, a marketplace in Delhi. Sushmita revealed an equivalent in an interview with late actor Farooq Shaikh on his show 'Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai'.

The video is now going viral. Sushmita is often heard telling Shaikh within the video, "We did not have enough money to afford designer outfits. we would have liked four costumes. We were middle-class people and that we knew our restrictions."

Sen then went on to speak about how her mother gave her the arrogance to hold the robe. "My mother said, 'So what? they're not getting to check out your clothes, they're getting to check out you.' So we bought a bit of cloth from Sarojini Nagar market. Downstairs, within the garage, there was an area tailor who made petticoats. We gave him the fabric and said, 'This will come on TV, make an honest dress.' He made my winning gown out of that fabric and my mother made a rose out of the remaining fabric. We bought fresh black socks, cut it, put elastic in it then I wore them as gloves," revealed Sushmita.

"The day I won Miss India wearing that gown was a really big day on my behalf of me. you do not need money to urge what you would like, your intention should be right," she was heard talking within the video. Sushmita appeared together with her parents on the show.
