Kalank box office day 1: Kalank has emerged as the biggest opener of 2019 as well as the highest opening day earner for its stars Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan.

Bollywood’s period love saga Kalank, that hit theatres on Wednesday, is breaking records at the box office just a day after the release. The film has made an opening collection of Rs 21.6 crore. Starring Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit and Aditya Roy Kapur in lead roles, Kalank is directed by Abhishek Varman.

The film’s makers confirmed that the film earned Rs 21.6 crore on Wednesday, making it the highest opening of 2019. Akshay Kumar’s period war film Kesari earlier held the numero uno position with Rs 21 crore, closely followed by Alia Bhatt-Ranveer Singh-starrer Gully Boy that earned Rs 19.41 crore on day one of the releases.

Kalank is also the highest opener for Varun Dhawan - he earlier had Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol-starrer Dilwale as his biggest opener with an earning of Rs 21 crore. Alia, too, also has Kalank as her highest opener as her recent Gully Boy earned Rs 19.41 crore on day one.

Interestingly, Kalank is also the highest opener for Alia-Varun Jodi as their last outing, Badrinath Ki Dulhania (2017) collected Rs 12.25 crore on the first day of the release.

Produced by Karan Johar, Kalank is a richly mounted period drama set in the 1940s. It is a story of family, passion, and emotions.

The film has opened to mixed reviews, with critics praising performances but panning the treatment of the story. Raja Sen wrote in his review for Hindustan Times, “Directed by Abhishek Varman and shot by the masterful Binod Pradhan, the makers of Kalank not only want every frame to be a painting but every dialogue a proverb, every scene a portent. The result is beautiful but tedious, an opera that needed a stout songstress to warble through it midway. We see revolutionaries in different shades of mustard since it is set around the kite festival of Basant Panchami, but as Kalank goes on, we are conditioned to the exorbitant colors and their matching — from scarlet umbrellas to marsala walls and columns. Yet it jars when rioters holding swords march in fiery streets, dressed as if they’d first bickered about a suitably Prussian shade of blue.”

The first song from Abhishek Varman's period drama, Kalank is set to be out today. Titled Ghar More Pardesiya, the song will be picturized mainly on Madhuri Dixit-Nene and Alia Bhatt, while Varun Dhawan will be making a grand appearance. Yesterday, Alia teased the fans by posting her still from the song. She shared excitement by writing, "A song that gave me sleepless nights, days & months is coming very very soon.. I think you can safely say that I have never been SO nervous for anything in my life.. *screams frantically and hides under bed* You may have to send a search party to find me Meanwhile watch this space for more.."

Alia and Varun also shared the teaser of Ghar More Pardesiya song which left people excited to watch the full video. Varun revealed a few details by writing, "The first song of #kalank #GharMorePardesiya is out tomorrow. Get ready to witness this spectacle tomorrow and the introduction of where Zafar has grown up"

Today, Karan Johar posted a couple of stills from the song and it will definitely make one impatient. In one of the stills, Madhuri and Alia are decked up in traditional attire while ready to flaunt their incredible dancing skills. On the other hand, kohl-eyed Varun is seen giving an intense look.

Kalank also stars Sonakshi Sinha, Sanjay Dutt and Aditya Roy Kapur in the lead roles. The film is slated to release on April 17, 2019.

Ahead of the first teaser of the ambitious period drama on Tuesday, makers of Kalank have teased fans with new stills from the sets of the film Monday afternoon. The new picture are silhouettes of Madhuri Dixit, Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha, and Aditya Roy Kapur - we have already seen these characters through posters of the film that were released online over the last week.

One of the images shows a side profile of Madhuri’s character Bahaar Begum while another shows Alia from a distance. Varun’s back is seen in another image and Aditya is seen looking at a street.

While Alia plays Roop, Sonakshi is Satya, Sanjay Dutt essays the role of Balraj Chaudhry and Aditya Roy Kapoor is Dev Chaudhry. Varun Dhawan’s character is called Zafar in the film.

Kalank has an ensemble cast including Varun Dhawan, Alia, Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi, and Aditya Roy Kapur and brings together Sanjay and Madhuri after a long time. It is also the fourth film there Alia and Varun are featuring together after blockbusters like Student of the Year, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and Badrinath Ki Dulhania.

The film is set to hit theatres on April 19 and the teaser is scheduled to arrive Tuesday afternoon.

Abhishek Varman's upcoming directorial Kalank is one of the most awaited films of 2019. When Karan Johar announced the cast of his next production Kalank, he got everyone excited.

And why not?

After all, it's the fourth film where we will get to see the hit Jodi of Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan.

And then, there's Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit Nene who has romanced each other several times on screen, who return for an encore.

That's not all.

Sonakshi Sinha, Aditya Roy Kapur and Kunal Kemmu feature in the cast as well.

Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan just wrapped up Kalank and we got treated to a whole lot of leaked videos, pictures and candid snaps with the whole unit of this ambitious period film. The movie has a bevy of Bollywood stars starting from Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditya Roy Kapur and most awaited Jodi of all: Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit! Guess, Varun and Alia’s schedule is over since they started shooting for a while. The two shared many pics with their team on the last day of the shoot after which Varun promptly got his long locks cut only to begin the prep for ABCD 3 with Shraddha Kapoor! A black and white picture of Varun and Alia was shared by the two talented actors marking the wrap of the movie.

Also, a video of Alia dancing in a lehenga got viral over the weekend. Now, we have our hands on a picture which depicts Alia Bhatt as a typical traditional bride complete with red lehenga, kaleeras and a matching dupatta. Needless to say, she looks breathtaking. We know that the movie is based in the period of 1940 and is set majorly in Pakistan. No wonder, Alia has been portrayed as a traditional bride from the North from pre-partition, at the time when India and Pakistan were one country.

 Alia Bhatt has an interesting line up of projects. She will be seen in Brahmastra with beau Ranbir Kapoor. She also has a very interesting role in Takht which again is a multi starrer. Her glimpse from the Ranveer Singh starrer Gully Boy trailer is also earning her a lot of appreciation.
