Kerala Flood Relief: Kerala Minister appreciates Prabhas for his kindness and slams highly paid Malayalam actors for not supporting victims

Followed by the many donations of actors across the world, recently, it was Prabhas who came to the forefront after making a generous donation to the Kerala Floods Relief Funds. The Baahubali star specifically found an admirer in Kerala Minister Kadakampally Surendran, who recently not only appreciated him for the kind heart but also slammed many Malayalam actors who failed to make a contribution to the funds for the state.

Baahubali star Prabhas donated Rs. 1 crore as a part of the Kerala Flood Relief Funds, an initiative that was started by the Chief Minister of Kerala. In fact, we hear that the actor even visited the state after he came to know the tragic condition of the flood victims. Heaping praises at his kind-hearted nature and generosity, Kerala Minister Kadakampally Surendran expressed his anger over Malayalam artists who earn more than Rs. 3 crores per movie but haven’t raised any funds despite the disastrous condition of the state and the people living there.

In a recent speech made by the State Tourism Minister, he said, “We also have many Malayalam artists who earn more than Rs. 3 to 4 crores per movie. We have to find them. But in Andhra [Pradesh], there was someone who had no idea about the Malayalam industry, donated Rs. 1 crore. He did not hesitate. In fact, he even came to visit the state after the tragedy struck.”

Not just him, actress Sheela who made a contribution of Rs. 5 lakhs to the flood relief fund, also said, “There are so many who own cars worth Rs. 3 to 4 crores and this is the kind of contribution they give to the people residing in the same state.” Here’s a video of the same that was shared on the internet by a Malayalam news channel:

While in Malayalam actors it was superstar Mammootty and his son Dulquer Salmaan who donated Rs. 25 lakhs together, there were many from the Tamil and Telugu industry who too contributed to the funds. It included Allu Arjun, Kamal Haasan who made a donation of Rs. 25 lakhs each, Chiyaan Vikram who made a contribution of Rs. 35 lakhs and a day ago, musical maestro A R Rahman too donated Rs. 1 crore that he earned from the concert.

Kangana Ranaut donated Rs 10 lakhs to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for the rehabilitation of the flood ravaged state of Kerala.

Actor Kangana Ranaut is following in flood-ravaged Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and many others from Bollywood. She has also made a big donation to a relief fund for people affected in the Kerala floods.

According to a report in Times of India, the actor donated the money to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund and has also urged her followers to help the flood-ravaged state in any way they can. The other celebrities who donated for this cause include Sushant Singh Rajput, Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Anushka Sharma and her cricketer husband Virat Kohli. Randeep Hooda went a step further and visited the state and helped people by providing them with food.

Now the people of Kerala and their chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan are focusing their energy on rehabilitating the people. People from across the world have been donating for this cause, and it includes the film fraternity of South India and the Bill Gates Foundation.

On the movie front, Kangana Ranaut is currently busy wrapping up her period film, Manikarnika, which is a biopic of Jhansi Rani. The actor is also working on Mental Hai Kya alongside her Queen co-star Rajkummar Rao. She has signed to play a kabadi player in Panga, which will be directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari and is also reuniting with director Anurag Basu for a film.

Randeep Hooda is the latest celebrity who is contributing to the relief and rehabilitation work in the aftermath of the devastating Kerala floods. The difference is he is present on the ground, helping the needy.

The Kerala floods have shown how devastating nature’s fury can be. There has also been an outpouring of shock and grief on social media. The call for help and donations has been very vocal. While a number of celebrities including Shah Rukh Khan, Sushant Singh Rajput and Amitabh Bachchan, among others, have contributed liberally, some like Randeep Hooda has gone a step further--the actor has joined the relief work, being done by a group called Khalsa Aid, on the ground.

Posting a picture of the actor, serving food to a child affected by the catastrophe, the group’s Instagram handle wrote: “Bollywood actor @randeephooda joins the Khalsa Aid team in #Kerala ! It’s great to see celebrities on the ground and not just simply commenting on social media.”

Wearing a black T-shirt, with the logo of the group (possibly) printed on it, a flowing beard and a black patka (a headgear worn by Sikhs), Randeep is almost unrecognizable.

Randeep has been in a social work mode for a while now. His social media timeline is full of images and work being done by Mumbai-based environment activist Afroz Shah to free Mumbai’s beaches of plastic waste. There have been times when he joined Afroz’s team. Randeep’s contribution in Kerala brings back memories of the work done by actor Siddharth (of Rang De Basanti fame) during the equally havoc-causing Chennai floods in 2015. Randeep has also been sporting the Sikh look for a while now, as he is shooting of his upcoming film based on the battle of Saragarhi, being directed by Rajkumar Santoshi.

Actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s gesture of paying Rs 1 crore (that too in the name of a fan) to Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund has been praised. However, some on Twitter are not happy with Amitabh’s contribution of Rs 51 lakhs and his personal belongings. Oscar-winning sound artist Resul Pookutty has been at the forefront of coordinating relief and donation work.

While much of the focus is on Kerala, neighboring Kodagu in Karnataka too has had to face the brunt of nature’s fury. Among those celebs who have contributed and are requesting for help in this region is veteran actor Prakash Raj.

Donations and technical help from all corners of the country are trying to get Kerala back to its normal after floods hit the god's own country very badly. Film celebrities, politicians and govt employees along with common public donated huge amounts so far.

Governments of different states and center too announced crores but according to the latest announcement from Kerala CM Pinatayi Vijayan, UAE (United Arab Emirates) has offered Rs 700 crore to help flood-affected Kerala. Though this gigantic financial help is more than that of our own central government, Center might not accept financial help from any foreign country and the same applies to this offer from UAE, said a senior ministry level officer. 

On the other side, Ministry of External Affairs too denied being offered red any financial help or a proposal yet. The Ministry of Home Affairs clarified that NRIs can donate to Kerala CM's relief fund as that will be tax-free. More than 200 people died so far and an approximate loss of Rs 20,000 Crore is estimated. 

It is already known that center has released Rs 600 crore to the relief of Kerala floods and other assistance is being provided. However, the home affairs ministry refused to declare it a national calamity under the Disaster Management Act but claim that the government is already treating it as a natural calamity of severe nature.

Even as flood-ravaged Kerala breathes a sigh of collective relief as the rains have ceased, giving the citizens of God's Own Country much needed respite, the state is confronted with the daunting task of rehabilitation.

Karan Johar, Varun Dhawan, Chitrangada Singh, Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Anushka Sharma have created awareness about the magnitude of what the Centre describes with strange understatement as a 'serious calamity' and urge Indians everywhere to do whatever they can do to help.

Many film folks has contributed financially to the cause.

While Shah Rukh Khan's Meer Foundation, named after his father, has donated Rs 21 lakh (Rs 2 million) to the flood victims, Jacqueline Fernandez has committed Rs 5 lakh (Rs 500,000) to the NGO Habitat for Humanity India's Kerala Flood Relief Programme.

Malayalam superstar Mammootty and his son Dulquer Salmaan have donated Rs 25 lakh (Rs 2.5 million).

While the Kerala floods devastated the state and incurred a whopping Rs 20,000 Crore-plus (as per the assessment of ASSOCHAM and Kerala government) damage, the one and only Chief Minister (other than Kerala CM) who has demanded the Centre to consider it as National Disaster and provide special financial assistance to Kerala in this tested times is nonetheless AP CM Chandrababu Naidu.

Apart from donating Rs 10 Crore fund to Kerala CM Relief Fund, Naidu has also sent Rs 6 Crore worth rice bags to the flood-hit state as immediate measure. Besides this, AP Secretariat employees JAC, pensioners, NGOs together have contributed Rs 24 Crore, Police officials, employees together have donated Rs 7 Crore, MPS, MLAs and MLCs have donated Rs 2.5 Crore. Chandrababu has read the complete financial aid from AP government alone and declared it as Rs 49.5 Crore. And the contribution of the private people and other companies from the state is excluded from this. Reading this huge financial help from AP, Naidu has remained the Centre to do more help to Kerala.

Naidu has also found fault with PM Modi for announcing mere Rs 600 Crore financial aid and dubbed it as 'insufficient'. Chandrababu said Modi hasn't functioned the way he ought to in the issue of Kerala when such a national calamity has struck a state.

He even recalled how Modi and Centre had went back on their word for Vizag when Hudhud cyclone disrupted the city. Naidu recalled that Modi had announced Rs 1000 Crore financial aid to Vizag but the Centre had only disbursed 650 Crore. Chandrababu said Prime Minister and Central Government should come to the rescue of states in such natural calamities in Federal system. He said Modi government failed to do so.

Brave men of Indian security forces are trying their best to rescue trapped people in Kerala which is reeling under unprecedented flood. One such officer is Captain P Rajkumar (Shaurya Chakra) of Indian Navy, who managed to save 26 people in a single sortie on Friday. 

He showed great skills to land the Seaking 42B chopper on a narrow rooftop. According to Indian Navy, " Yesterday Captain P Rajkumar Shaurya Chakra winched up 26 people from a SeaKing 42B helicopter, in extremely challenging conditions hovering between trees and in the limits of man and machine". 

Navy spokesperson also re-tweeted a video of Rajkumar's heroic landing. 

Rajkumar and his men showed exemplary valor during the Ochki cyclone storm, when they took midnight sorties to rescue trapped fishermen ignoring choppy seas. For this work, Rajkumar was awarded the Shaurya Chakra. 

As the flood situation continued to remain appalling all across Kerala, Indian Navy deployed 18 more teams at various locations on Friday to augment the rescue operations in the state. Southern Naval Command had deployed a total of 58 rescue and diving teams with Gemini boats in multiple locations but seeing the worsening situation, 18 more teams have been pressed into service. Navy is also readying 25 more rescue teams with boats for deployment on request of state government with fresh incessant rain alerts.

On Friday, a total of 310 people have been rescued by the boats and 176 by aircraft. "Till date, more than 3,000 people have been rescued by the Southern Naval Command and continuous efforts are on to bring the flood-affected people to safety and also provide them essential relief supplies such as food and water," said a Navy statement.

Air rescue has been carried out at various places of the three worst affected districts; namely, Thrissur, Ernakulam, and Pathanamthitta. Various aircraft including ALH, Sea King, Chetak and MI 17 (of IAF) were able to rescue more than 176 people till now. Food was airdropped on the rooftops of various houses and churches till now. A total of 50 air sorties amounting to 80 hours have been flown.
