Latest Movie News: Sonakshi Sinha on why Akshay Kumars face dominates Mission Mangal posters: ‘Jo bikta hai, voh dikhta hai’

Sonakshi Sinha has spoken about why Akshay Kumar’s face is more prominent on Mission Mangal’s posters. She said that Akshay is the highest-selling star in the entire film.

Mission Mangal posters show Akshay Kumar as the lead actor.

Not one to mince her words, actor Sonakshi Sinha exudes confidence when she speaks. Perhaps that’s what translates into her film choices as well. Be it doing a film like Lootera (2013) that broke her ‘glamorous’ image, or balancing it with an out-and-out masala franchise like Dabangg (the third part of which she’s filming with Salman Khan), she has worked with the biggest of stars in Bollywood. Yet, she doesn’t seem to have any worry about how much screen-time she gets in any project. She tells us that she’s only concerned with her part, and how she executes it.

Excerpts:

You started off in films with masala potboilers, but your recent and upcoming lineup of films like Khandaani Shafakhana and Mission Mangal are not run-of-the-mill fares. What made you shift to such subjects?

That’s what keeps me engaged with my work. I get to play different roles in every film. Even if you see my lineup, each one is different. It’s been going on for the past few years. I really enjoy doing and watching that kind of films. But it’s not like I’ll stop doing (masala) films. I also want to do that, and do this. I want to be that actor you can imagine in any kind of films, any genre and it can be as contrasting as a Lootera or a Rowdy Rathore.

Kalank earlier this year, and Mission Mangal next, both are multi-starrers. How do you handle professional rivalries that crop up due to whether each actor will get enough screen-time?

I honestly haven’t faced that at all. Why should I be insecure? I’m very confident about my work, and what I’ve to offer as an actress, what I bring to the table and a film. I work very hard, and nobody can take that and my talent away from me. I know that is what’s going to get me to work at the end of the day, not my connections with anyone, not who I am. It’s just how I’m on set, as an actor, how I work with people.

Mission Mangal is a story about a team of women scientists. But the hero, Akshay Kumar’s face was bigger than anyone in the film’s poster. What is your take on this?

I also read this somewhere. To all of us, it was teamwork. Even while we were shooting, nobody was made to feel smaller than the other person, despite there being so many people. And the fact of the matter is that Akshay Kumar is the biggest star in the film! Someone had told me very long back (smiles) and this line has stuck in my head: ‘Jo bikta hai, voh dikhta hai’. Today, if you see Akshay’s collections, he’s the highest-selling star in the entire film, that is why (his face is bigger on the poster).

Having worked with a younger crop like Varun Dhawan and Ranveer Singh, and veteran stars like Salman Khan and Akshay, do you find any difference in, say, how they behave on sets, their prep process?

Every actor has a different process. I can’t compare according to the age, or how long they have been in the industry. Salman has a different process, Akshay will have a different one, so will Varun and Aditya (Roy Kapoor). It depends on the actor.

Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan has called for people to join hands and help the victims of Assam floods as he donated Rs 51 lakh for victims of Assam floods.

Thanking the actor for his support, Assam chief minister tweeted, “We appreciate Shri Amitabh Bachchan ji for contributing Rs. 51 lakh to Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. This is a great gesture & show of care for the people. Thank you, on behalf of the people of Assam, for your support. @SrBachchan.” Quoting the tweet, Amitabh sought help from his fans and wrote, “Assam is in distress .. the floods have caused great damage .. send care and assistance for our brothers and sisters .. contribute generously to the CM Relief Fund .. A source from the industry told Hindustan Times, “Akshay has always been contributing for various causes. Be it the popular Bharat Ke Veer initiative for the armed forces or his contribution to the Kerala flood relief fund or help for the Chennai floods, he has been the one to take the lead. The best part about this donation is that Akshay has done it equally for animals stuck in the Kaziranga National Park.”

On the work front, Amitabh is currently shooting Shoojit Sircar’s Gulabo Sitabo with Ayushmann Khurrana in Lucknow. He has Brahmastra lined up for release next year where he will be seen alongside Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Nagarjuna, and Mouni Roy. The film is directed by Ayan Mukerji and is the first in his upcoming fantasy trilogy likely to be based around a mix of Indian mythology and science fiction.

Latest Report: We are extremely secure actors': Vidya Balan on sharing the screen with Taapsee, Sonakshi, Kirti, Nithya in Mission Mangal

Glad our movies are celebrating our achievements: Vidya Balan

Vidya Balan on Thursday said real-life stories like the successful launch of the Mars Orbiter Mission by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) should be celebrated by the society and cinema. The actor, who plays one of the scientists behind the 2013 project said she fell in love with the story the moment director Jagan Shakti and producer R Balki narrated her the script. The actor recalled that it was the first film in her career when she said 'yes' immediately.

"I felt this story needed to be told. We Indians do not wear our pride on our sleeves for our country and I am glad that more films are being made that make us aware of what a great nation we are. When I roam around the world, I see people are so proud of their nation or heritage. If there is anyone who needs to be proud, it is us. Our culture, our history, and our achievements are great and we should start celebrating them. I am glad our movies are doing that and 'Mission Mangal' is doing that," Vidya Balan said at the trailer launch of the film.

Besides Vidya, the film also stars Taapsee Pannu, Sonakshi Sinha, Kirti Kulhari, Nithya Menon, Akshay Kumar and Sharman Joshi. Talking about her experience of working with a predominantly female cast, Vidya said, "I can say this with utmost honesty that we all are extremely secure actors because we were appreciating others. We had so much fun while working on it that Jagan Shakti (director) had a tough time giving us directions."

Sonakshi said the film celebrates the spirit of teamwork, something that was truth behind the scenes as well. "We all are happy and proud to be part of this film," she said. Taapsee said they had tried to recreate the photo of the saree-clad women scientists celebrating the launch in the film as well. "We have tried our best to show the achievements of these women in a two-and-half-hour film," she said.

Nithya, who is making her Bollywood debut with Mission Mangal, said she was glad to have chosen this project as her first Hindi film. "I wanted to debut in a good film and I have always followed that in the South. We all worked as a team in the film. We used to eat together and Akshay would insist we eat together and he would get food for us. I felt welcomed and accepted here. I did not feel like this is my first film in Hindi." The film is set to be released on August 15.

Latest Update: Director Raghava Lawrence quits Laxmmi Bomb, posts message on Twitter

Director Raghava Lawrence has quit Laxmmi Bomb, the Hindi remake of his Tamil film

Akshay Kumar plays the lead in Kanchana remake Laxmmi Bomb. The original was also directed by Raghava Lawrence.

Raghava Lawrence has stepped down as the director of Akshay Kumar-fronted Laxmmi Bomb after the first poster of the film was released. The director, who was set to helm the Hindi remake of 2011 Tamil horror comedy Kanchana, announced his departure from the project on Twitter.

Lawrence, in a statement issued on Saturday, said there were “multiple reasons” for his exit, one of them being the first look poster which was released without any discussions with him. “In this world, more than money and fame, self-respect is the most important attribute to a person’s character. So I have decided to step out of the project, Laxmmi Bomb, the Hindi remake of Kanchana. I don’t want to mention the reason because there are multiple reasons, but one of them is that the first look poster of the film was released today without my knowledge and even without discussing anything with me,” the filmmaker wrote.

Lawrence said he felt “disrespected and disappointed” and as a creator, he was not satisfied with the poster design. He said he would allow the makers to use his script as he is a professional and holds Kumar in high regard.

Sequel Movie: Hindi Chandramukhi- Bhool Bhulaiya To Get A Sequel!

Akshay Kumar rose as a star with the emergence of Priyadarshan in Bollywood. The ace Malayalam director turned South films into plausible Hindi comedies and in major of them, Akshay starred as a lead.

Along with Priyadarshan, Anees Bazmee also contributed to Akshay's success as a comedy movie star after Govinda lost that throne.

After Baby, Akshay changed his image to this patriotic hero on screen but that is getting monotonous too. Hence, the hero is looking to mix it up again.

He wants to concentrate on comedies too and Bhool Bhulaiya is one of his best horror comedies. As he is looking to make Kanchana remake, he wants to make a sequel to Bhool Bhulaiya also it seems.

The movie is a remake of Malayalam film, Mani Chitratazhu which was remade as Aptamitra in Kannada and then made as Chandramukhi with Rajnikanth in Tamil.

Chandramukhi is still highly popular but its sequel Nagavalli ended up as a laughing stock. In Kannada, though as Aptarakshaka it became a 200 days movie and also last movie of Vishnuvardhan, the superstar of Kannada Cinema.

Well, Priyadarshan after his Malayalam film will make this one with Akshay and the shoot will mostly start by December end, it seems.

Latest Update: Why are B-Towns heroes looking at Tamil and Telugu films for villainous roles?

People are bound to give it a second look because of curiosity. Also, the pan-India appeal makes it viewer-friendly, says Taran Adarsh, the trade analyst

Much before he donned the costume for Shankar’s 2.0, where he played the antagonist, we had asked Akshay Kumar why he said yes to playing a negative role in the Rajinikanth starrer. “Because villains ke award mein lobbying nahin hoti hain!” he had responded with a loud laugh. The superstar might have been kidding about his villainous turn, but the fact remains that his negative act coupled with Rajinikanth’s might have helped the sci-fi film’s final collection for all formats to reach a massive Rs 655.81 crore!

Honestly, the idea of a conventional hero playing a villain is not new to Hindi cinema. Akshay himself played a man with amoral values in 2001’s Ajnabee. Shah Rukh Khan, who is looked upon as the king of romance, ironically played the anti-hero in more than one film — Baazigar (1993), Darr (1993), Anjaam (1994), Duplicate (1998) and Don (2006). In fact, the shahenshah of all heroes — Amitabh Bachchan, too, could not resist the lure of playing a baddie in movies such as Faraar (1975), Parwana (1971), Aankhen (2002) and Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag (2007). Actors like Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan, Hrithik Roshan, and John Abraham among others, too, have explored their darker sides. Last year, it was Ranveer Singh who got the maximum applause in Padmaavat, even though he played the cruel ruler Alauddin Khilji.

While these villainous portrayals were few and far between, lately, the grey shade seems to be holding quite an appeal for B-Town’s heroes. Prateik Babbar has recently been named the antagonist in AR Murugadoss’s Darbar featuring superstar Rajinikanth as a cop. And if rumours are to be believed, SRK will once again play the bad man in his Tamil debut, actor Vijay’s upcoming film Thalapathy 63.

HEROISM IS OVERRATED

How does a hero prove that he’s a hero if there isn’t a villain to make his life hell? Akshay, who knows this quite well, told another publication why he took on the role of the shape-shifting antagonist Pakshirajan in 2.0. “Many people asked me why I wanted to play a villain and I told them, ‘Why not?’ A hero exists only when there’s a villain.”

Shah Rukh, who has seen success in both his avatars — heroic as well as villainous — has, in the past, been vocal about the lure of the darker side. “Evil or devil, black or little grey characters, be it in books, stories, films or television, have some sort of attraction... I enjoy doing it. I am in no way glorifying negative characters. These are stories and characters. But as an actor, it is one of the greatest highs to play a villain. It is a different kind of a high for an actor,” he has been quoted as saying.

EYEING THE SOUTH

The other notable thing that seems to be happening is that a number of these ‘switchovers’ are happening in the South film industry. While AK’s 2.0 was a Tamil film, Vivek Oberoi has become a sought-after actor in the South after playing a villain successfully in movies such as Vivegam (Tamil) and Lucifer (Malayalam). Darbar, in which Prateik will be crossing swords with Rajinikanth, too, is a Tamil project. It might be a coincidence but the fact remains that including a Hindi cinema star to a South film lends the movie a pan-India appeal. Also, there is curiosity about what the combination of two stars from two different film industries will bring to the table. Take 2.0, for instance. While Rajinikanth is a superstar in every sense of the word, the Khiladi is undisputedly one of the most successful actors in Bollywood today, with the ability to pull in the masses. His presence in the film ensured that the Hindi version became the fifth-highest Hindi grosser of 2018, netting Rs189.85 crore at the domestic box office.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh agrees that a movie starring a Bollywood actor in a South film does have its charms. “People are bound to give it a second look because of curiosity. Also, the pan-India appeal makes it viewer-friendly,” he says. However, he doesn’t believe that the South connection is a major factor when it comes to actors making the switch. “Maybe the offers they received were lucrative. It all boils down to the content. Roles are not defined anymore and the lines have blurred. Actors, today, want to do all kinds of roles to showcase their range and versatility. If they are getting an opportunity to do that in a South film, why not?” he concludes.
