Here are the ever-stylish and suave Super Star Rajinikanth looking like a million bucks in a policeman's avatar and a thick beard. This picture was captured recently on the sets of Rajini's latest film 'Darbar'. The photograph is going viral among the Thalaivar fans on social media.

Ever since Darbar's shooting began in Mumbai earlier this year, several on-location stills, especially revealing Rajini's and the film's heroine Nayanthara's looks, have been doing the rounds on the internet. The team has been following strict measures to prevent the leaks, but none of them seem to prove successful.

Darbar is being directed by AR Murugadoss and produced under Lyca Productions banner. Suneil Shetty and Nivetha Thomas will be seen playing important roles in the movie. Darbar is scheduled for release during the Pongal holidays early next year.

South Superstar Rajinikanth whose previous outing 'Petta' turned out to be a super hit in Tamil is now going to test his luck with his upcoming movie 'Darbar'. The shooting of the movie is currently going on at high pace.

Lady superstar Nayanthara is rumored to be roped as the lead actress beside Rajinikanth and the shooting is expected to commence on April 10 in Chennai.

A. R. Murugadoss took to his Twitter page and shared the first look of his upcoming directorial 'Darbar' which stars superstar Rajinikanth in the leading role.

The much anticipated first look of Rajinikanth's 167th flick 'Darbar' is out and the film goes on floors from tomorrow in Mumbai. The film is expected to have a Pongal release in 2020.

The film will be directed by A.R. Murugadoss while the music director will be 'Kolaveri' fame Anirudh Ravichander. Nayanthara who is regarded as the 'Lady Superstar' in the Tamil industry will be playing the female lead.

While this film is Rajini's first outing with A.R.Murgadoss, it will bring back the on-screen pair of Rajini and Nayanthara after 11 years, this pair was last seen in films such as Chandramukhi, Kuselan and Sivaji the boss.

Darbar is bankrolled by Lyca productions and this also makes it Rajini's second association with the production house after the 2018 magnum opus 2.0 that is India's most expensive film and also the first time that Rajini enthralled his fans in 3D.

Santhosh Sivan will be cranking the camera for this film and the last time he shot a Rajini film was 28 years ago. This is also the third time that Santhosh Sivan will be teaming up with Murugadoss.

Rumors have been doing the rounds that Rajini's next could be a cop flick and if the first look is anything to go by, Rajini will certainly be donning the Khakhi.

The poster drops enough hints including that of weapons, handcuffs, IPS insignia, the police cap and belt, and also a police hound, set in the background of the Gateway of India. To top it all, Rajini is seen sporting a menacing smile and what looks like a salt-and-pepper look.

"You decide whether you want me to be good bad or worse" is a striking punch dialogue that makes an appearance on the poster, hinting that this could be a fans delight and a typical Superstar film.

Rajini had a great run at the box office in late 2018 and also early 2019 with two releases- 2.0 and Petta in quick succession. Both the films were massive hits with 2.0 becoming the highest grossing Indian film ever. 2.0 had Rajini playing the roles of scientist Vaseegaran and Chitti the robot. Whereas in Petta, Rajini played a hostel warden.

While his friend from the industry and contemporary Kamal Haasan is busy crisscrossing Tamil Nadu on the campaign trail, Rajini is doing what he does best, at the sets.

Rajini had hinted all through 2018 about his political foray and about possibly contesting the 2019 polls, but in a statement issued in February this year, he put all rumors to rest. He stated that he or his party would not be contesting the polls. The statement also added that their focus would remain the Assembly polls in Tamil Nadu that are slated for 2021. Rajini, however, urged his fans to vote for a decisive majority for a party whom they think would be able to solve Tamil Nadu's water woes.

At this juncture, Karthik Subbaraj who has made some impressive films earlier teamed up to do a masala entertainer with the superstar. Petta is a film that is made by a diehard Rajani fan for the superstar's fans.

What is it about?

Kaali (Rajinikanth), a mysterious old man comes to a hostel as a warden and immediately teaches a lesson to some bad guys (Bobby Simha and co). Later he supports a young couple (Megha Akash and Samantha), which leads to unforeseen circumstances. But there is more to the story as Kaali has an untold past. He is not Kaali, but Petta Veera! Why has hidden his identity and living in exile?

Performances:

Rajanikanth is at his vintage best as Kaali. His energy, mannerisms, and style will bring back the memories of vintage Rajani. Despite playing an aged character, Rajani has been given the look of a youngster and he is super stylish in blazers and sweatshirts. The film is all about Rajani in spite of many well-known actors playing key roles and the superstar delivers his best in his inimitable style.

Simran has a brief role as a charming middle-aged woman and Trisha has very limited screen space as Rajani's wife in the flashback scenes. Vijay Sethupathi has been wasted in a very ordinary role. Same is the case with other talented actors like Sasikumar and Bobby Simha. Bollywood actor Nawazuddin Siddique plays the typical meek villain character and he does well.

Technicalities:

Karthik Subbaraj's aim is pretty clear. He didn't want to make a content ridden film with Rajani, but deliver a film that appeals to Thalaiva fans. He showcased Rajanikanth so well in a stylish character that is a feast for his fans. His love for Rajanikanth is evident in every frame. However, besides presenting Rajanikanth in a role that connects to today's audiences, Karthik Subbaraj neither wrote an engaging script nor kept the entertainment factor intact. The second half is a mess.

Anirudh once again delivers topnotch background score and a couple of songs are high on energy. Cinematography and stunt choreography also are very impressive. Editing could have been better as the film is unnecessarily long. Production values are solid.

Analysis:

Directors are unable to make use of the demigod image of Rajinikanth lately. Rajinikanth's films are repeatedly failing at the box office as they couldn't enthrall fans and appeal to film lovers as well. Director Karthik Subbaraj of Pizza and Jigarthanda fame, a self-proclaimed diehard fan of Rajinikanth made a film that brings back the vintage Rajani. The plot of Petta is similar to many of Rajani's blockbusters of the past.

Rajanikanth comes to a place by hiding his actual identity and then the real background of his is revealed later. Then it is followed by the revenge saga. Most of the Rajani blockbusters have a similar theme and Petta also heads in the same direction. But the major difference is the way Rajani has been presented. Rajinikanth as Kaali, the hostel warden is a treat to watch. There are a lot of fan-moments and punchlines in the first hour besides some energetic songs.

Rajinikanth also plays the 'lover boy' for some time with veteran actress Simran playing his romantic interest. Not a single dull moment in the first half, which ends on a high note with the reveal of Petta. Flashback portions are decent, although it isn't as powerful as Basha. But the real problem arises with Rajani getting into revenge mode. Director tried too hard to make it look like a fresh idea, but he only messed it up in the process.

The film was dragged on and on unnecessarily, but the climax packs a punch. Second half needs a lot of trimming as it could dent the prospects of the film's box office performance. Petta, on the whole, is a film for Rajinikanth fans that are missing vintage Thalaiva lately. You cannot miss watching the first half of Petta if you are a diehard fan of Rajanikanth.

Shankar might have disappointed with me, but that hasn't bogged down the crazy combo of Shankar and Rajinikanth for a sequel to his erstwhile blockbuster Robot (Enthiran), i.e 2.0. Made with a staggering Rs 450 Crore budget, the much-awaited action thriller has hit the screens on Thursday.

Despite being Thursday and being a dubbing film, 2.0 has got good openings. The film claimed to have earned 12.43 Crore share approximately in the Telugu states alone. As per reports, Nizam alone has earned 4.75 Crore share on the first day. This is certainly big. This has yet again proved the charisma of Rajini and Shankar in Telugu.

Akshay Kumar is set to break his own record for second time in a year and that too after just 100 days. His Gold releases on 15th August and gathered Rs. 25.25 crore. In the process, the earlier record of his biggest opener ever, Singh Is Bling [Rs. 20.67 crore], was broken. However, as is the adage, all records are meant to be broken and if the kind of traction that 2.0 is seeing is anything to go by, there is a new record that the sci-fi film could well be setting on coming Thursday.

While it is a given that between all the languages (Tamil, Telugu, Hindi) the film is going to be the hugest ever for not just Akshay Kumar but also Rajinikanth, just the Hindi version too is set to be Akshay Kumar’s biggest ever. The bare minimum numbers for the film are touted to be in excess of Rs. 25 crores and while we would be bringing on our official predictions article soon, one can well expect a hurricane at the Box Office once 2.0 hits the screens.

There are many reasons that are contributing to the huge buzz that is set around the sci-fi action entertainer. Even though the teaser was just about fine, the promo made quite a few heads turn and made one await what this Rs. 500 crore saga had to offer. The real turnaround happened though during last 10 odd days ever since the new creatives from the film started making their way into the digital medium.

Various new posters of the film with Akshay Kumar leading the show has turned out to be nothing less than a masterstroke since that has managed to attract a pan-India audience. The disappointment of not seeing enough of the Bollywood superstar in the teaser was wiped off by the promo that had ample presence of him. The posters that came out subsequently brought out an altogether different perception about his supervillain acting 2.0 and that has managed to ignite highlighted passion amongst his fan-base who are rooting for him in a major way.


The good thing is that Rajinikanth is not minding that at all either and is complete supporting his Bollywood’s prominent presence in the marketing plan. He too realizes that if 2.0 is aiming for an all-India Blockbuster status then there has to be Akshay Kumar on the forefront. After all, his last release Kaala was an undisputed disaster in the Hindi belt and hence Akshay’s presence only helps in adding on to the huge moolah which needs to be recovered in order for 2.0 to make profits.

With Karan Johar backing the film and aiming for yet another Baahubali re-dux of sorts with 2.0, one awaits a bumper opening this Thursday which should only elevate the extended weekend.
